"Operation Prom Night 2006" ..."Imagine that you are a bystander at a collision. The accident has just happened, and a passerby has already called the police to report a serious accident. One car was driven by a young man who was driving his date and some friends' home after a prom party. The driver has been drinking and even though his friends told him he shouldn't drive, he assured them that he was "just fine" and "don't worry about it." He has always been a skilled driver, and his friends thought that this one time would be OK. While driving down the street, the young driver swerved to avoid a pothole. Since his reaction time had been affected, he failed to swerve back into his own lane quick enough and struck an oncoming car head-on. The other car contained a family of four"........ On March 28th - 30th, the Garland County Sheriff's Department assisted LifeNet, Arkansas State Police and the Garland County Coroners Office with "Operation Prom Night". Operation Prom Night dramatizes the effects of a drinking and driving collision after a prom night party and what EMS, law enforcement and fire departments face in the performance of their duties every day. Once of the few differences between Operation Prom Night and a real incident is that the "victims" are able to walk away. Its purpose is to remind teens that drunken driving, reckless driving and not wearing seat belts on prom night, or any night, can end in disaster and claim innocent lives. Performances were held at the following schools: Lake Hamilton, Lakeside and Jessieville. This program represents the combined efforts of the Arkansas State Police - Troop K, Garland County Coroners Office and was assisted by many key agencies, including the Garland County Sheriff's Office. Since 1996, LifeNet has presented this program to over 19,000 high school students.
